What to Look for When Buying Precious Metal Items

Published: 25th October 2021

The British Hallmarking Council along with the four Assay Offices of the UK, have launched a new video to help consumers understand the importance of hallmarking.

In the UK it is illegal to supply or offer to supply any item as gold, silver, platinum, or palladium (above a certain weight) unless it is hallmarked.

The hallmark is your guarantee.

This new video shows you what needs to be hallmarked, what a hallmark looks like, and what it tells you, along with explaining the information you need to look for in shops or a seller's website.

The Sheffield Assay Office was established in 1773, under an Act of Parliament and today the company assays and hallmarks the precious metals - silver, gold, platinum and palladium. Sheffield Assay Office is one of only four UK assay offices who all work to uphold the Hallmarking Act of 1973 and continue to ensure consumer protection for customers purchasing precious metals.
