Our Ongoing Commitment to Reduce, Recover and Recycle
Published: 14th March 2024
As ongoing members of the Responsible Jewellery Council, here at Sheffield Assay Office we're fully committed to improving the efficiency of our operation, above and beyond our legal and regulatory requirements.
To that end, we have recently upgraded all our car park lighting, providing a significant energy saving with the change from halogen to LED. Dusk 'til dawn sensors have also been fitted, offering even more environmental and financial benefits.
With only a small section of lighting within our overall operation still to be addresses, we're excited to become completely light energy efficient and to further our aims to become as environmentally friendly as possible.
In terms of reducing waste, we have recently purchased a 4 tonne compactor for card and plastic.
This has helped us create space by reducing the number of card recycling bins on site, and allows us to bale and sell card materials to recycling companies.
And our newly baled plastic waste is now processed more conveniently for our operations, and is collected from us free of charge by a local recycling organisation.
The Sheffield Assay Office was established in 1773, under an Act of Parliament and today the company assays and hallmarks the precious metals - silver, gold, platinum and palladium. Sheffield Assay Office is one of only four UK assay offices who all work to uphold the Hallmarking Act of 1973 and continue to ensure consumer protection for customers purchasing precious metals.
