Sheffield Assay Office's Historic Timeline
Published: 26th February 2024
To celebrate our 250th anniversary last year we created a timeline to document the history of Sheffield Assay Office. It was amazing to start at 1773 and work through all the historical events that have happened since, and shaped both the industry and the office.
We are extremely proud to have such a fantastic heritage and to be able to share it with you. When we host our visitors, it is great to be able to talk through, not only our history, but also that of the entire industry. What the important and poignant times and dates have been over the years.
In the 250 year history of Sheffield Assay Office, we have only had 13 Assay Masters who have led the company through the changes to help create what we are today. We wanted to be able to share our history and you can click through the link below to open our timeline and work your way through the years.
The Sheffield Assay Office was established in 1773, under an Act of Parliament and today the company assays and hallmarks the precious metals - silver, gold, platinum and palladium. Sheffield Assay Office is one of only four UK assay offices who all work to uphold the Hallmarking Act of 1973 and continue to ensure consumer protection for customers purchasing precious metals.
