Sheffield Assay Office Appoints Mark Vaughan as Chief Operating Officer

On 31st March 2025 the Assay Master, Executive Committee and all staff were delighted to welcome Mark Vaughan onto the team, as Chief Operating Officer.

Mark comes from a career in the Stainless Steel and Super Alloy supply chain (raw materials & manufacturing). Having spent a total of 24 years with the global ELG Group, where he was latterly CEO of the UK and Australia business units, Mark brings a wealth of experience and management skills from the metals sector. 

In addition, Mark has been a Freeman of the Company of Cutlers in Hallamshire since 2016, is a Chartered Member of the CIWM and was previously both a director of the BMRA and Chair of their Legislative & Policy Group.

Sheffield Assay Master & CEO, Ashley Carson said "I am delighted that Mark has joined us at the Assay Office as Chief Operating Officer. There were over 60 applicants and Mark shone above all others.  I am looking forward to working with Mark to help him understand all facets of our organisation and how best to assist me in developing the business”.

The Sheffield Assay Office was established in 1773, under an Act of Parliament and today the company assays and hallmarks the precious metals - silver, gold, platinum and palladium. Sheffield Assay Office is one of only four UK assay offices who all work to uphold the Hallmarking Act of 1973 and continue to ensure consumer protection for customers purchasing precious metals.
