Past Assay Office Chairman, Peter Hayes, dies age 78

It is with immense sorrow that we announce the news that our past Chairman, Peter Hayes, has sadly passed away yesterday, aged 78.

A prominent member of Industry within Sheffield, Peter was a Director of Sheffield Technology Park for over 16 years. He was elected onto the Assay Office Executive Committee in October 2007 and was elected Chairman in 2016, retiring from office in 2019.

Living for many years in the Hope Valley, Derbyshire, Peter and his wife, Hilary,  later moved back to his London home upon his retirement.

Assay Master, Ashley Carson said "Peter was a hugely supportive and enthusiastic Chairman and will be very sadly missed by many people. On behalf of our current Chairman, Charles Turner DL, our Guardians and staff, I would like to send our heartfelt condolences to Peter's wife Hilary and their family."

The Sheffield Assay Office was established in 1773, under an Act of Parliament and today the company assays and hallmarks the precious metals - silver, gold, platinum and palladium. Sheffield Assay Office is one of only four UK assay offices who all work to uphold the Hallmarking Act of 1973 and continue to ensure consumer protection for customers purchasing precious metals.
