New Chairman of Birmingham Assay Office Visits Sheffield
Published: 8th February 2023
Sheffield Assay Master, Ashley Carson recently welcomed Birmingham Assay Office's new Chairman, Russell Jeans and Assay Master, Doug Henry for a special meeting and tour of our state of the art premises.
Mr Jeans has been newly appointed to the role of Chairman and asked to visit Sheffield Assay Office in celebration, as this year both organisations will be reaching their 250th anniversary! This meeting of two of the UK's four Assay Offices was also a great opportunity to promote the importance of hallmarking and consumer protection.
Our Assay Master, Ashley Carson was also joined by Sheffield's Chairman, Charles Turner and the two were delighted to give their guests a tour of our Hallmarking and Analytical Services departments, followed by a special lunch in the library.
Speaking of the visit, Mr Carson said; "It was an honour to welcome BAO’s new Chairman and also Doug the Assay Master. Online selling of jewellery continues to be a huge challenge for Hallmarking compliance and this was also an important topic discussed on how we can work closely together in supporting Trading Standards."
The Sheffield Assay Office was established in 1773, under an Act of Parliament and today the company assays and hallmarks the precious metals - silver, gold, platinum and palladium. Sheffield Assay Office is one of only four UK assay offices who all work to uphold the Hallmarking Act of 1973 and continue to ensure consumer protection for customers purchasing precious metals.
