New Video Explains Hallmarking at Sheffield Assay Office
Published: 8th October 2021
In the fifth short video from the team at Sheffield Assay Office, we give you a brief glimpse into our state of the art facilities and explains the ins and outs of our cutting edge hallmarking services. Although we've had several different homes over the years, Sheffield Assay Office has been providing hallmarking services since 1773, when local silversmiths petitioned Parliament for the right to assay silver.
Viewers are given a brief glimpse into our hallmarking department, where highly accurate instruments are used to ensure that all items meet the strict requirements of the UK Hallmarking Act and Hallmarking Convention. We also explain the three main methods we use here at Sheffield Assay Office; hand marking, press marking and laser technology.

The Sheffield Assay Office was established in 1773, under an Act of Parliament and today the company assays and hallmarks the precious metals - silver, gold, platinum and palladium. Sheffield Assay Office is one of only four UK assay offices who all work to uphold the Hallmarking Act of 1973 and continue to ensure consumer protection for customers purchasing precious metals.
