Don't Be Caught Out by the Price of Lab-Grown -v- Natural Diamonds

Lab Grown Diamonds are continuing to rise in popularity.  As a younger generation enters the diamond market, consumers are generally more price conscious and are gravitating to more suatainable products. However, these requirements now seem to be capturing a wider audience, especially with the introduction of certified stones on larger sizes.

The use of lab-grown diamonds is acceptable for many reasons, however it is vital that any product being sold is accurately described, enabling the consumer to make the choice that best suits their needs.

The worry is that smaller lab grown diamonds may enter the supply chain in fancier items of jewellery and these may not be known about, either by the retailer or the consumer. The purchase of diamonds, or any piece of jewellery is a very sentimental process and it is therefore important that both the buyer and seller have 100% confidence.

Furthermore, there is a large difference in the price.  The differential previously was approximately 20%, however now this is nearer 40-50%.  As more lab grown producers are entering the market, the price has not yet stabilised and is still reducing. This is great news for those choosing to purchase lab grown diamonds, but if these synthetic diamonds were found in the supply chain where they shouldn't be, this would be likely to affect both the retailers reputation as well as the expectations of the consumer who chose to purchase a natural diamond, or so they thought.

As it is impossible to tell if a diamond is lab grown by eye, even that of a gemologist, there are a number of pieces of equipment that have been developed to do just that.  At Sheffield Assay Office, our Diamond Verification Services has been created to give confidence to both the retailer and the consumer.  Partnering with DeBeers Group, we use their ground-breaking SynthDetect machine, currently the most accurate machine on the market.  We are able to test individual pieces or bulk shop/new stock.
