Continuing Support for the National Market Traders Federation

Sheffield Assay Office is delighted to continue it’s membership of the National Market Traders Federation, an association that began more than 120 years ago and can justly claim to have a proud pedigree when it comes to standing up for its members.

Our Assay Master, Ashley Carson, gave a presentation to the members at last year’s conference to explain the importance of the Hallmark within the jewellery industry.  There is a huge number of jewellers across the country selling through the market system and it is therefore very important that they all fully understand the rules of retailing covering all sellers.  Ashley was able to advise them exactly what is required to ensure that they are compliant and so that they can explain that to their own customers, thereby raise perception to the consumer as it is demonstrating their purchase is protected and they are not at any disadvantage.

The majority of products sold are regulated but many retailers are still unaware of the requirements in respect of jewellery products, which can seem quite complicated.  The Assay Office is able to advise about these regulations to any market traders who are already selling jewellery or are looking to enter the market, including advice on how to use the Dealers Notice which is legally required to be displayed at the point of sale.

Our Assay Master campaigns tirelessly as part of the British Hallmarking Council to raise awareness across the whole industry to retailers and consumers and, as a member of the NMTF is looking forward to advising members and becoming part of the community.

Ashley recently attended the 125th Anniversary Conference held in Stratford Upon Avon where he met many traders and is looking forward to an opportunity to meet with NMTF CEO, Joe Harrison to discuss ways to provide further support.

The Sheffield Assay Office was established in 1773, under an Act of Parliament and today the company assays and hallmarks the precious metals - silver, gold, platinum and palladium. Sheffield Assay Office is one of only four UK assay offices who all work to uphold the Hallmarking Act of 1973 and continue to ensure consumer protection for customers purchasing precious metals.
