Published: 26th February 2024
Sheffield's Guardians of the Standard of Wrought Plate, Canon Keith Farrow and Curator Emma Paragreen, recently gave a special lecture to the Cawthorne Jubilee Museum Society, sharing the history and work of Sheffield Assay Office in its 250th anniversary year.
Chris Moxon, Programme Secretary said; "Thank you so much for your wonderful presentation this evening. Members said how much they found it fascinating and interesting. I hope that you realised by the response from members to your talk, how educational it was for them, enhanced by Keith's display."
A donation was also made by the group to the Mary Parsons Charity for, old poor and infirmed silversmiths of the City, a charity administered by Sheffield Assay Office.
The Sheffield Assay Office was established in 1773, under an Act of Parliament and today the company assays and hallmarks the precious metals - silver, gold, platinum and palladium. Sheffield Assay Office is one of only four UK assay offices who all work to uphold the Hallmarking Act of 1973 and continue to ensure consumer protection for customers purchasing precious metals.
