Assay Office Chairman, Charles Turner DL, Awarded MBE in New Year Honours List

Assay Master, Ashley Carson, and everyone here at Sheffield Assay Office are delighted to be able to offer our very warm congratulations to our esteemed Chairman, Mr Charles Turner DL, on being awarded an MBE in the New Year Honours List for 2025. The prestigious award was given for Charles' outstanding contribution to manufacturing and business in Sheffield.

Charles became a Guardian here in Sheffield back in October 2007 before joining our Executive Committee in November 2012 and going on to become our current Chairman in December 2019.

Outside of the Assay Office, Charles is Managing Director of Edward Turner and Son Ltd; a Sheffield-based organisation which owns a group of companies in the UK and Overseas specialising in the manufacture of machines, knives and industrial blades under the Durham-Duplex brand.

A retired Army Officer, Charles spent 20 years as the Sheffield Defence Advisor on behalf of the Secretary of State for Business and is currently Chairman of Made In Sheffield, promoting the use of the Made in Sheffield Mark by eligible companies.

Charles has served as a Deputy Lieutenant for South Yorkshire since 2019 and held the distinguished role of the 384th Master Cutler for the Company of Cutlers in Hallamshire between 2023 - 2024, following in the footsteps of his late father, the Honourable Edward Turner, as the 365th Master Cutler in 2003-04.

"We're absolutely delighted that Charles' achievements and his support of manufacturing and business here in Sheffield has been recognised with such a prestigious award. We are very proud to have him as our Chairman here at the Assay Office, and are grateful for his help and commitment in steering, supporting and developing the wide ranging activities here at the Assay Office. Huge congratulations Charles on a very well deserved award" said Assay Master, Ashley Carson.

The Sheffield Assay Office was established in 1773, under an Act of Parliament and today the company assays and hallmarks the precious metals - silver, gold, platinum and palladium. Sheffield Assay Office is one of only four UK assay offices who all work to uphold the Hallmarking Act of 1973 and continue to ensure consumer protection for customers purchasing precious metals.
