250 Years of Lasting Impressions: Exhibit at Millenium Gallery
Published: 20th September 2023
Dating back to the 13th century, the process of assaying and hallmarking precious metals is one of the earliest forms of consumer protection. A new display in the Sykes Gallery Metalwork Collection at the Millenium Gallery tells the story of Sheffield Assay Office, established in 1773 and one of only four remaining Assay Offices in the UK.
In this exhibit you can see a range of objects and material chronicling our long and fascinating history, including items from Sheffield’s Metalwork Collection alongside loans from Sheffield Assay Office and Sheffield Archives.
On display until 10th March 2024, this exhibit coincides with our momentous 250th anniversary and is one of several exciting celebrations happening throughout the city of Sheffield during this time.

The Sheffield Assay Office was established in 1773, under an Act of Parliament and today the company assays and hallmarks the precious metals - silver, gold, platinum and palladium. Sheffield Assay Office is one of only four UK assay offices who all work to uphold the Hallmarking Act of 1973 and continue to ensure consumer protection for customers purchasing precious metals.
